VIDEO: Liverpool Edge Manchester City on Penalties in New York

All Goals – Manchester City 2-3 Liverpool… by GabriOne

It came down to a dramatic finish in New York City’s historic Yankee Stadium yesterday as Liverpool edged out Premier League rivals Manchester City on penalties to claim their second win of the Guinness International Champions Cup.

After sailing past Olympiacos in Chicago, the Reds kept their pre-season preparations on track against the Citizens with another win in front of a truly international travelling Kop. City striker Stevan Jovetic opened the scoring after a telling cross slipped past the attentions of Steven Gerrard for the Montenegrin striker to finish past Simon Mignolet, but Jordan Henderson would be on point to restore parity with his first goal of the summer campaign.

Jovetic would set up a nervy finish by adding to his tally when a suspect bit of defending from Sebastian Coates presented him with a fine opportunity, but there’d be no joy for the relatively small contingent of City supporters today. Raheem Sterling ended last season on a high and he’s not wasting any time picking up where he left off by following up scoring the winner against Olympiacos by sending his one to penalties with another blistering finish.

Despite the wealth of talent at City manager Manuel Pellegrini’s disposal, he watched on in horror as his charges missed three of their four spot kicks while new boy Emre Can, Henderson and Lucas all found the back of the net to secure top spot in their group ahead of Saturday’s meeting with AC Milan in Charlotte, North Carolina.
