Wilfried Bony Plays Down Liverpool’s Summer Interest

Who? Me?

Following the departure of Luis Suarez for Barcelona in a big money move, Liverpool were linked with a number of strikers as a repalcement for a golden-booted Uruguayan, and though they ended up bringing in Mario Balotelli from AC Milan as the transfer window petered out, one player they were continually linked with a move for was Swansea City hit-man Wilfried Bony.

The Ivorian quickly adapted to the Premier League following his summer move from Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem, scoring an impressive 21-league goals during his first season with Swansea City. This, of course, lead to speculation that he’d be moving on with London clubs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur joining in the Reds in registering an interest in his services. Despite all the jibber-jabber in the papers, Bony has since revealed that no serious offers were ever tabled for him.

“If you score 20 to 25 goals, then people talk about that, for sure, but there was not a real proposition” confirmed the 25-year old when asked whether he had the chance to leave the Liberty Stadium during the summer. “I one time did that when I was at Vitesse [tried to orchestrate a move away], it caused a lot of problems at the club, so I don’t think I will do it again. Something can happen, football is crazy. But now I just think about my team and how happy I am here at Swansea, which you can see.”

That’s not lip service either; Bony, who have five goals in 12-appearances for Swansea City this season, has since shrugged off any interest that other clubs have shown him to commit his immediate future to the Welsh club by signing a one-year extension to his current deal. With the Reds struggling in front of net, we’re left to wonder what might have been — he’s got three more league goals than all of our strikers combined! Maybe we should have been a bit more interested…
