While it might be a bit too early to start talking about the market, the news outlets never really stop talking transfer rumours and there was no exception this past week when Liverpool striker Christian Benteke was prime topic of conversation with the Belgian reportedly looking for a way out of Anfield this summer.
That, of course, isn’t the most inventive story. The 25-year old has struggled for game time under Reds boss Jurgen Klopp since the German arrived back in October though the former Borussia Dortmund manager has insisted time and again that Benteke has a future on Merseyside — even though it’s quite obvious that he’s behind the likes of Roberto Firmino, compatriot Divock Origi and the finally fit Daniel Sturridge in the pecking order.
With the whisper of the week being that the big striker is eyeing a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal at the end of the season, online football media outlet Sports Witness reached out Benteke’s agent Kismet Eris and he was quick to quash talk of a move away with a rather text book response, saying that his client “was only thinking about Liverpool at the moment”.
Snubbed for Origi in the League Cup final and looking less and less likely to be given a chance to finally find his feet at Anfield despite being publicly backed by his manager, the powerful 25-year old could very well end up making a move this summer, but angling for one now could very well backfire on him with a top side unlikely to take a chance on a striker that’s unable to adapt. Besides that, Liverpool will be looking to recoup as much of the £32.5mil they paid Aston Villa for his services — a feat that won’t be easy at all.
