Liverpool Linked Neven Subotic Eyeing Move Away from Borussia Dortmund

During the January transfer window there were almost daily whispers that Liverpool would make a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic, but ultimately the Serbian hard-man ended up seeing out the campaign with the Bundesliga club despite languishing on the bench for much of it.

He’s grumbled about his increasingly small role at the Westfalenstadion on numberous occasions before and with the official opening of the transfer window looming, he’s taken to social media to do it again. Having made just eleven appearances under Jurgen Klopp’s successor Thomas Tuchel at Dortmund, the 27-year old has reiterated the fact that he wants to be playing regular football and that he’ll be looking for a move away from the club this summer.

“Dear friends, last year I realised that my love of football in an active role on the pitch is too big to just be able to see it from the outside,” said Subotic on his Facebook page. “I am now at the best age for a footballer and naturally want to use this time to bring me and my team forward every day and to have the feeling of being needed on the pitch,” he continued. “I don’t want to earn my money sat on the bench, but to be an active part of a story as I was until last year. I hope you can understand,” wrote the Serbian defender before adding, “BVB are the club of my heart and always will be.”

The Reds, of course, have been heavily linked with a move for Subotic given his connections with Klopp and a move may not be out of the question. Although the German manager was able to coax the best out of Dejan Lovren, the future of Mamadou Sakho remains unclear with the Frenchman set to face a UEFA panel on the back of a failed drugs test. With veteran defender Martin Skrel looking set to leave the club and Kolo Toure already gone, the relative inexperience of incoming Schalke 04 man Joel Matip and youngster Joe Gomez could be a cause for concern. If Sakho is handed a lengthy ban or Klopp decides to shuffle on one of our more senior players, Subotic could be the perfect replacement…
