Sturridge Talks “Great” West Ham Goal, Klopp Hails “Brilliant” Timing

After stumbling against Southampton last weekend, Liverpool came back in a big way at the London Stadium yesterday, putting four past West Ham United en-route to planting one foot firmly in next season’s Champions League.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Reds striker Daniel Sturridge, back in the starting eleven and scoring goals again. “This was an important game for us, it was a big one. We came here with the right attitude, we knew what we had to do, and it was great to get the victory,” added the 27-year old, speaking to Sky Sports. “These are the things that you don’t train on too much, when you’re through one-on-one, because you don’t get that much time, but I felt sharp,” said the striker, reflecting on the opener. “I’m glad to be starting, glad to be providing some chances for the boys as well, and as I said, it’s a great victory for us.”

Latching on to a highlight reel worthy through-ball from Philippe Coutinho, the Liverpool striker did was he does: a perfect touch and a step-over or two before rounding Hammers ‘keeper Adrian and slotting home. The Brazilian would go on to add a brace and Divock Origi would round things off with an assured finish, but it was Sturridge that added the attacking impetus that the Anfield outfit have been missing over the past couple of weeks. A win over already relegated Middlesbrough back on Merseyside next weekend would see the Reds secure third place and a spot in the Champions League proper — though the 27-year old could very well be on his way by the time the Reds step foot on the continent.

“What do you think?” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp when asked whether Sturridge made an impact. “Yes, obviously, he is a good player. Unfortunately, he was not that often available, but it’s all good,” continued the German, happy to have the England man available. “I thought the timing was brilliant – Roberto out, Daniel best training week, really good and part of everything. [He had a] fantastic game today.”
