VIDEO: Reds New Boy Solanke Scores as England Book Semi-Final Spot

Although he won’t link-up with his new Liverpool teammates until at least July 1st following his international commitments, Reds new boy Dominic Solanke has given us a taste of what to expect when he does roll in to Anfield later this summer by helping the England U-20 side to the World Cup semi-finals by potting the winner against Mexico in South Korea on Monday.

In a match that also saw Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria make a cameo appearance, Solanke broke the deadlock early in the second half, showing the kind of spacial awareness, direct running and composed finishing that earned him plaudits during his time with Chelsea. His second of the tournament, the 19-year old has impressed for Paul Simpson’s side who will now square up to Italy on Thursday as the young Lions go in search of some much needed silverware.

“Sometimes in big games, and this was a huge game, there is a little bit of nervousness, so I think we just had to get through the first half to be able to play the second,” said Simpson, speaking to the Football Association after the game. “Sometimes you just have to get a foothold in the game and we came out and started the second half really well. We were pressing, closing down, we turned them round and got people running in behind through some really good football,” added the Englishman. “The big difference was we came out with a little bit more belief and cast away those nerves that were a little bit evident in the first half and I thought it was a good performance.

While it’ll be a challenge to break in to the Liverpool first team this season, Solanke appears to have all the hallmarks of an attacker that’ll fit right in to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp’s all-action style of play. Willing to drop off and get involved, the 19-year old is an unselfish, hard working striker that’s just as good at running the channels as he is at running at his man head on — something that has both the German manager and Kopites alike excited to see him pull on the famous red shirt.
