Squaring up to Bayern Munich in their opening match of the Audi Cup was always going to be a serious step-up for Liverpool’s pre-season preparations, but the team from Anfield have been around the block a time or two and weren’t fazed by the bright lights of the Allianz Arena.
“Not quite as positive [as others] because [although] I saw that we won [and] nearly everything was super, we’re still in preparations and we have to think about what we have to do that helps us for all games,” explained Reds boss Jurgen Klopp despite watching his side put three past the Bundesliga champions. “We haven’t played enough football so far and Bayern had too much possession,” conceded the German manager. “In the first half we played very well on the counter, defensive pressing was very good. If you look at the intensity of the training in the last few days, it was very good.”

Sadio Mane opened the scoring against Carlo Ancelotti’s side and Mohamed Salah added another before the break as Liverpool controlled proceedings. Marko Grujic had what should have been the icing on the cake incorrectly called back for offside, but that didn’t keep the Reds from adding a third with Daniel Sturridge coming off the bench to do what the striker does best to set up a meeting with Atletico Madrid in the showpiece finale tomorrow.
“As a manager, I look at that, and maybe it’s [because of] tiredness that it hasn’t been 100 per cent but I see that we’re getting there,” explained the Liverpool boss. “We have really trained a lot around these games and it’s not that we’re fresh for the preparation games,” added Klopp, knowing full well that the season is just around the corner. “I’m quite satisfied with how they’ve played but I think we can do better.”
