Odds and Ends

There’s a few bits of transfer news coming in on the News Desk.  Some have been sitting there getting crusty and others are fresh, sort of like our players.  Ba-dum-pish!  I’ll be here all week.  No really, steven’s out of town…

It seems that Riera is finally out and on his way to Olympiakos.  That does not seem surprising to me at all since he already showed what a whiny ass he is when he does not get his way.  The additions of Jovanovic and Cole also made it tougher to see Riera in the squad, especially if Babel sticks around.

Liverpool finally signed 18-year-old, Danny Wilson, from Rangers.  The young defender was transfered for around £5mil.  Strangely enough, that is pretty much what Riera was sold for.  Coincidence?  I read somewhere1 that Liverpool has not won the league since they had a Scot in the squad.  Maybe this transfer will cure that.

It’s going to be hard to get used to seeing Joe Cole in a Liverpool shirt.  Apparently, he’s taken the #10 as opposed to the #7 as was initially reported by some dudes that actually get paid to do this shit.  Roy’s being realistic and warning everyone that it’s going to take more than a signing or two to get over the depression from last season.

I can assure [the Liverpool fans] we’ll make plenty of efforts on the field, and I’ll hope to dispel the doom and disenchantment in that way, but it’s not going to be an overnight thing. Unfortunately, last season was a very disappointing season for the club in every respect, culminating in a popular manager leaving the club – you don’t dispel that with a couple of signings and I wouldn’t ever want to try and dupe the Liverpool public by telling them all is rosy now because Joe Cole is signing. There is a lot more work to do and there are a lot more players needed.

Hopefully, this is a signal that more signings are on the way.  Hodgson also mentioned that Philipp Degen was not a part of his plans and would be allowed to leave.  So far, it seems that the right moves are being made in the transfer market, albeit with a bit of luck on free transfers.  It is also great to see business conducted in a quiet manner.

Liverpool’s first test of the pre-season2 will be today against Zürich side, Grasshopper.  It is mostly a reserve squad with Lucas wearing the armband.  I wish we could skip over all of this stuff and get to the Arsenal match.  COME ON YOU REDS!
