Steven Gerrard Signs New Liverpool Deal

Kissing the badge isn’t always an empty gesture…
Though there was really no fear of Steven Gerrard leaving Liverpool this summer, the Captain has decided to put pen to paper on a new 2 year deal which will see him wear the famous Red shirt past his 35th birthday and effectively close out his playing days at the club he joined as a schoolboy.

Gerrard, who made his Liverpool debut against Blackburn Rovers in the fall of 1998, has been a mainstay in the Liverpool first team for 14 years now and with his current deal set to expire next summer, has been working with the club and Managing Director Ian Ayre to sort out the finer points of a new deal which he’s expected to sign within the next 24 hours now signed. The Skipper started 36 league matches last season as he shook off the nagging injury problems to put in one of his most consistent seasons in a Red shirt, scoring 10 goals in all competitions in the process. With 2 matches left in the season and nothing to play for, the club decided to push forward surgery to correct an on-going shoulder problem in a bid to have him ready for the start of pre-season.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers put it bluntly when he said “I can’t say that without Steven Gerrard we would be all right because I don’t believe we would”, and as his Liverpool squad prepares for it’s tour of Australia and the Far East, a full pre-season for the 33 year old will be a feather in the cap of the Ulsterman. With his testimonial match against Olympiacos coming up on August 3rd, seeing him back on the pitch will be the first real sign that the new season — and hopefully better times — are upon us.
