Downing Completes West Ham Move, Guilherme Siqueira Arrival Imminent?

All the best Stewie
With news filtering in that Stewart Downing has completed a £6mil move to West Ham United, there’s increasing speculation that Granada left-back Guilherme Siqueira will be arriving shortly in a £5mil move that will tick another box off Reds manager Brendan Rodgers pre-season list.

If shuffling under-performing, over-paid players off the pay-roll was priority number one, it’s safe to say that Rodgers has been doing an admiral job with Andy Carroll, Pepe Reina and now Stewart Downing making way; though the considerable loss taken on both Carroll and Downing – as well as the fact that we’re paying part of Pepe’s wages for him to play at Napoli – continues to be a point of contention with the more fiscally minded. Downing will be joining Hammers boss Sam Allardyce at Upton Park on a four year deal after initially spurning the advances of the London club.

The 29-year old preferred to stay and fight for his place in Brendan Rodgers squad – and hold onto his £80,000 per week pay packet – but ultimately realized his place in the first team would be limited at best. “It’s a great opportunity for me being here, it’s a great club and I’m really excited to get going” said the winger who will join former Anfield alumni Joe Cole and Andy Carroll in the capital. Meanwhile, the Reds are believed to be on the verge of landing Brazilian left-back Guilherme Siqueira from Spanish side Granada. Talks are reported to be on-going with the 27-year old ready to make the switch to Merseyside as competition for current incumbent Jose Enrique. More on this as it inevitably takes some sort of weird twist…

Charlie Adam, bought for 9 million sold for 5, Carroll bought for 35 million ( oooff that was hard to say) sold for 15 million, Downing 20 million, sold for 6 million… in total LFC lost £38 million.. just imagine what that could buy you now???? Kenny Dalglish should pay for the losses… I would like to hear what he has to say about that…

REALITY CHECK!! Every one wonders why FSG are not spending, but imagine being in their shoes…The club’s best player ever and “Savior” comes in and says to an owner new to soccer/football “I want him, him, him, and him and we will win the league.” So this naive owner goes and buys them for prices well over what they are worth because they don’t know any better. At the end, we do relatively bad, and they get rid of that manager and eventually some of those players. However, that 38 million pounds comes directly out of your pocket with nothing to show. Personally if I were the owners, I would be EXTREMELY cautious on the next few expensive buys, especially with a relatively unproven manager. I would make a few cheaper buys that the new manager wants and wait for the outcome. If they prove they are what the manager expected them to be, I would slowly work up to the more expensive ones, slowly putting trust in my Manager. This is what FSG are doing. They have the money but don’t want a repeat of Dalglish (I have nothing against the man, just not good the second time around). First transfers were obviously needed (regardless of performance later), so in came Allen and Borini. Then the cheap buys/bargains were put into play (Coutinho, Sturridge, Aspas, Toure, Alberto). Only Mignolet cost relatively more (for a goalie), but it was needed as Reina looked to leave, and he still wasn’t much compared to the Dalglish transfers. The more expensive buys haven’t happened yet, but many were rumored (25 for Mkhitaryan, 27 for both Eriksen and Alderweireld, 20.5 for Costa, etc.) Lack of CL is obviously hindering us, but the transfers will eventually come one BR proves himself to FSG.

    Sorry for the long post…

hard to argue. we snapped up some bargains in Coutinho and Sturridge and the rest of Rodgers signings look promising.

i think we’re focusing more on buying players that we know are going to fit our system rather than buying square pegs for round holes. the money is there, we’re just not spending it without thinking first. there’s no doubt that Kenny wouldn’t have bought those players unless he thought they were going to do the business for LFC. any assertions otherwise (not saying you made them, obviously) are misguided at best.

i have an editorial going up later today that touches on our problems in the transfer market this summer.

different manager. different system. different style. different tactics.

i’m not saying Downing, Carroll, Adam were good purchases by any stretch of the imagination, but to be honest, each of those players played very well in their respective teams (Downing especially) before moving to LFC.

unfortunately, they didn’t work out and we got robbed trying to move them on.
