Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones Join Liverpool Academy

Guess who’s back

It was all the way back in April, 1992 that Robbie Fowler signed professional terms with Liverpool; now, the striker is joining fellow Reds legends Steve McManaman and Rob Jones as the trio assist with the development of the u18’s and u21’s at the Liverpool academy.

These players need little to no introduction; Fowler is the fifth highest Premier League goal scorer, McManaman is the most decorated English footballer to have played abroad and Jones won both the FA Cup and League cup during his time with Liverpool. The boss is obviously pleased with his new recruits; “It’s great to have Robbie, Steve and Rob on board,” said an enthusiastic Brendan Rodgers. “I said at the end of last season that I wanted to get more former players involved and over the off-season I spoke to a number of them about a possible role here.”

Although the Merseysiders have boasted a number of burgeoning talents in their ranks, getting them up to Premier League standards has proved to be a challenge and this is where the former Kop icons will assist Alex Inglethorpe and Neil Critchley – providing specialist training sessions in their area of expertise. “They are giving them little pointers and passing on experiences from their own careers to help the youngsters,” said the Reds boss, who continued, “The young players coming through are picking up vital bits of information. I’m pleased that it’s working well. ”

The trio won’t only be providing coaching, but mentoring as well. Each has had a long career in professional football and knows what it takes to make it both on and off the field; and, of course, a passion for the club. “Getting the likes of Robbie, Steve and Rob involved is all part of that. They offer wisdom, they have played at the top level and they also understand what playing for Liverpool Football Club is all about.” We’re looking forward to a future filled with goal poachers, flying wingers and tough as nails defenders.
