Reds Open Contract Talks with Reserve ‘keeper Brad Jones

Sticking around

Although Liverpool have been widely tipped to sign a new goalkeeper to provide both cover and competition for Simon Mignolet, in a surprising move, they have offered a new deal to long-standing number-two Brad Jones.

The Australian shot-stopper moved to Anfield from Middlesbrough back in 2010 and it was expected that the 33-year old would be on his way out the door this summer when his deal expires having made only 25-appearances for the first team since arriving on Merseyside five years ago. Now, it would appear that the club has changed their mind and will look to retain the services of Jones for at least a little while longer with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers confirming that talks are ongoing.

“There have been discussions,” said the Northern Irishman when asked about negotiations between the two parties. “Obviously, Brad is in his last year but nothing has been resolved on that.” Jones looked set for an extended spell in the first team back in December when Mignolet was dropped for an “indefinite period” following a poor run of form, but a thigh injury picked up away to Burnley FC on Boxing Day ended his chance to make a claim for the number one spot.

Despite his limited chances at Anfield, the Australian born ‘keeper has been angling for a new deal with the club and has kept the right attitude all along. “I have been playing that way since I signed my first contract (to try and win another one). Everyone wants to link other players with us and that is probably not going to change,” he said before the turn of the year. “We will get linked with another 20 goalkeepers now but I won’t let it affect me. Every game that I play, I will just go out and do my best.”

We do need a 3rd choice keeper.can’t for the life of me see a good reason why we are not going after Cech.i know Mignolet has improved as the season has gone on but does anyone really have true faith in him.do we really believe he is a good enough keeper for LFC.think he would provide perfect cover for Cech but that’s where he is at.

He’s a home-grown player. Makes sense to keep him around if Mignolet is still going to be first choice come next season.

Can’t see Chelsea letting us snap up Cech. I think we burned them quite bad when we got Sturridge…

no, i beg to differ. he is really really poor.while mignolet was frozen out and jones started (before getting injured himself), he made ZERO saves in those 3-4 games, all of which we lost. we need a better 2nd choice (if not first), he offers absolutely nothing, give ward a day out if anything

If all the talk of cech going to either Arsenal or PSG & Chavski allowing him to make the final decision because he deserves to, then why shouldn’t we try buying him.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we were at least in the conversation this summer, but we could just as easily drop Jones to third spot if need be. It’s not like he’s making too much money or is too good to not be in the squad if we have a better alternative.

I think quite a lot of Mignolet’s turn around in the net has been down to our defence being tighter. When Jones was thrown into the mixer, he hadn’t played a first team match since Nixon was president and it was when our backline was at its most porous.

He’s not the best ‘keeper around even for second choice, but I think his homegrown status is a plus for us if we don’t try to sign an alternative this summer.

Besides that, he’s got great hair.

With are transfer committee think its more likely we go for someone who’s twice as much but nowhere near as good.or maybe Peter Shilton coz he’s English.

zero saves, might i repeat. he was absolutely horrendous in that run. remember him diving the wrong side before even rooney kicked the ball from outside the box? only plus point is his great hair, lets weigh it against our 2015-16 season and look at the balance!
