Kolo Toure Considering His Future at Liverpool

Heading for the door?

After spurning the interest of Turkish powerhouse Trabzonspor last summer to stay and fight for his place on Merseyside, Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has admitted that he’ll be considering his future this summer with a lack of first team action the veteran defenders main concern.

Although there is talk of a one year extension on the table, the 34-year old, who played an integral role as the Ivory Coast marched to glory in the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, is hesitant to spend another season warming the bench. “It’s been a difficult season for all the team and everyone at the club as we haven’t done as well as last season,” he told the Liverpool ECHO. “For me, there’s a decision to be taken. I am looking around and seeing what’s best for my family. I’m talking with my wife to see what that decision will be.”

That decision could end up being to beat a hasty retreat from Anfield. The former Arsenal “Invincible” has made only 44-appearances for the Reds since moving to Merseyside on a free transfer in the summer of 2013 — though he was well aware that he’d be more of a bit part player rather than a leading man. That being said, it sounds he he didn’t think his role would be quite this small.

“It’s a difficult decision because since I’ve been here things have been good. I’ve really enjoyed it, even though it’s difficult when you don’t play a lot. I’m a competitor and I want to play more,” he continued. “Maybe when the season is over it will be easier to be relaxed and think about what’s the project and what’s the club’s plan for you. Things can happen very quickly in football. In two or three days your future can be decided.”
