If you’d forgotten just how good a defender Mamadou Sakho can be, the Frenchman happily provided a timely reminder yesterday throughout the 1-1 draw with Rubin Kazan in the Europa League.
The Reds may still be stuttering up top despite the arrival of new boss Jurgen Klopp, but the Anfield outfit already looks more assured at the back with the 25-year old continuing to be the stand out performer in a back-line that admittedly needs quite a bit of work.

“It’s very good. All of the team feels the same. It’s a new manager, a new mentality, new training – everything is new,” said Sakho when asked about the new manager and what his appointment means to the team. “I am a very ambitious man but I prefer to keep them to myself because some people will think I’m crazy! But we’ll see,” he continued, not yet ready to reveal just how far he thinks the Reds will go under the German. “Liverpool is a big club and we have to think about big ambitions.”
Winning all of his tackles, just shy of 70% of his headed-duels and providing three-clearances, the Frenchman put in an near perfect performance at the back against the Tartars last night. With the Reds pressing high up the pitch, Sakho did his part in shifting the play from defence to attack with three-interceptions and an 85% pass completion rate — the big man even created one chance for his team-mates, leading to the Kop urging him to push forward whenever he was on the ball.
