After putting in a string of so-so performances over the previous season, Liverpool fullback Alberto Moreno found himself on the periphries of the team under former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers at the start of the campaign with new recruit Joe Gomez played out of position to fill in for the out of sorts defender.
Although the Spaniard eventually won his place in the starting eleven back from the youngster, there were rumours circulating that the former Sevilla man could be heading back to Spain with La Liga giants Real Madrid reportedly interested in his services. The move never did materialize, but whispers of Los Blanco’s interest in Moreno has since resurfaced with the 23-year old flourishing under new boss Jurgen Klopp.
“It’s logical that they [Real Madrid] ask about such an important player. They are asking about him. Important teams from Spain and other places are asking,” his agent Javier Moya told Radio 4G. “If a team like Real Madrid speak with us and Liverpool are satisfied with the operation, they could talk. If a team with the substance of Real Madrid makes an offer, it would be a joy for him,” he continued, before backpeddling on his position slightly before ruffling any feathers on Merseyside. “It’s difficult. Everyone knows the importance of Real Madrid but Liverpool have five European Cups. You have to give the first step to Liverpool.”
While it’s highly unlikely that Moreno would be able to displace first choice left-back Marcelo in the starting eleven should he make the move to the Santiago Bernabeu, he would make excellent cover for the injury prone Brazilian. Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez is purported to be an admirer of Moreno and should he come calling, despite Liverpool being on the up under Klopp, the Spaniard may have a hard passing up the opportunity to not only return home, but play for arguably the biggest side in world football.
