Liverpool Eyeing Unhappy Borussia Dortmund Defender Neven Subotic

Linking Liverpool an interest in any Borussia Dortmund player is like shooting fish in a barrel, but rumours have persisted for quite some time now that the Reds will look to take out of favour defender Neven Subotic to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Signed by Jurgen Klopp from his old club FSV Mainz 05 back in 2008, the Serbian hard man was a regular feature for Die Schwarzgelben during his time at the Westfalenstadion, but he’s since fallen out of favour with his predecessor Thomas Tuchel preferring a central pairing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Mats Hummels with Sven Bender — who plies his trade primarily as a defensive midfielder — held in reserve.

That apparently hasn’t sat well with Subotic with the defender making only a pair of appearances since the start of the campaign. Earlier in the week, both Klopp and Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed that there was no agreement between the two that would prevent the Reds boss from making a move for any of his former charges and according to German media outlet Bild, he’ll be keen to see just how open they are to doing business when the Anfield outfit comes asking about the 26-year old defender.

Although it’s looking like Klopp has Liverpool’s defense back on the right track, there is a need to get a long term, stable partnership in the thick of things. With Martin Skrtel getting long in the tooth, Mamadou Sakho injury prone, Kolo Toure close to retirement and Dejan Lovren not always the most dependable, adding a proven defender that knows exactly what the manager wants is no brainer.
