Aubameyang Open to Liverpool Move, Eye-Rolling at an All Time High

Linking Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp with a move for any player that currently plays for Borussia Dortmund and/or previously played for the German manager during his time at the Westfalenstadion is a quick and easy story to write — especially when it comes to rumours that star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is keen to rejoin his old gaffer on Merseyside.

The problem with those stories is they don’t carry a whole lot of weight; lacking quotes or any tangible evidence, it’s a smoke without fire, eye roller. While the Gabon international looks almost certain to leave the DFB-Pokal winners this summer after falling out with the club, his destination remains to be seen after mega-rich French side Paris Saint-Germain pulled the plug on a deal rumoured to be worth a whopping £61mil — right about the same price that Liverpool are reportedly preparing to part with to secure his services.

If that sounds like a bit of nonsense to you, then you’re not alone. Although the Anfield outfit look certain to secure a spot in the Champions League proper, the draw of top class European football isn’t quite enough to entice a player of Aubameyang’s stature. Scoring an eye watering 120 goals in just 189 appearances for Dortmund, the 28-year old is widely considered to be one of the best strikers in world football and any club signing him is going to have to have extremely deep pockets with a bidding war sure to ensue. With that being said, reports over the weekend indicate that the Gabon international would be “open” to a move to Anfield. Talk is cheap, right?

Ready to push on and make a run at the Premier League title, the club are set to back Klopp in the a big way this summer as the Reds look set to complete the signing of Mohamed Salah from Serie A runners-up AS Roma and are still in the mixer when it comes to a bungled attempt to draft in Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, but Aubameyang is in an entirely different league. Harboring a well documented preference for Champions League holders Real Madrid, the 28-year old could very well end up making the move to Santiago Bernabéu this summer should Cristiano Ronaldo beat a hasty retreat from Spain over tax evasion allegations. The likelihood that he’s going to pop up on Merseyside remains slim to none.
