The 26-year old, who has had a tough time adjusting to life in the Premier League since his summer switch from Celta Vigo, is expected to be out for up to six weeks after injuring himself training at Melwood on Thursday. Over the international break Aspas, who has yet to find the net in six appearances for the Reds this season, spoke of his frustration at finding himself outside the starting line-up at Anfield and losing any consideration he may have had for a spot in Spain’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil next summer. If all he needs is time on the pitch, this latest setback will do him no favours.
Aspas, who joined Liverpool for £7.7mil from Primera Division strugglers Celta Vigo, has admitted that being behind both Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez in the Anfield pecking order has made things difficult. “It’s hard to accept when you’ve spent the last few years playing, but I knew it wasn’t going to be easy when I left Celta, and even more so now that my team is winning and joint league leader” said the Spanish striker.
“Little by little I hope to get some playing time under my belt and resolve the situation” mused Aspas last week, but with him on the sidelines until at least the beginning of December, the striker is going to have to work extra hard to find himself back in the side – at least he won’t lack for opportunities with the Reds slated for seven league fixtures over the festive calendar.
