The Nigerian winger, currently on loan at Liverpool from Chelsea, was included among a star studded list for the prestigious individual award. Moses played a major role for his country in January as the Super Eagles romped to their first African Cup of Nations victory in 19-years. “It was my first time playing a competition with Nigeria and travelling with the team, so I was delighted that we won the Nations Cup in South Africa” said the midfielder in a recent interview with KICK OFF magazine.
If winning some silverware with the national side wasn’t good enough, there would be another trophy to come when Moses lifted the Europa League trophy with Chelsea in May, scoring five vital goals in ten appearances in the competition. With competition for spots in the Blues squad intense, the 22-year old landed on Merseyside on transfer deadline day and has continued the kind of form that saw him nominated for such a prestigious award in Brendan Rodgers side.
It’s been 14 years since a Nigerian last took home the continents top honour, but Moses is just happy that he – and Chelsea colleague Mikel – were nominated. “I can’t remember the last time a Nigerian won African Footballer of the Year, I think it was 1999 with Kanu. It’s a great honour, so if one of us takes it will be special,” enthused the winger, and everyone here at Paisley Gates wishes him the best of luck.
