It’s finally happened; maybe it wasn’t the PFA Player of the Year award that he so richly deserved, but Golden Boot heir apparent Luis Suarez has bagged himself a piece of silverware — and at the Emirates Stadium no less.
The controversial Liverpool striker made waves with the Liverpool faithful when he tried to push through a move to Arsenal this summer after Brendan Rodgers side failed to secure Champions League qualification, but the Uruguayan goal machine wasn’t lifting anything glittery in a Gunners kit; it was a tuxedo actually, though he did get something shiny — the Football Supporters’ Federation Player of the Year award.
One only needs to look to Sunday when the Reds attacker put in yet another masterclass performance to see why Suarez beat out the likes of Robin van Persie, Leighton Baines, Christian Benteke, Juan Mata and Pablo Zabaleta to claim the prestigious honour. The Uruguayan scored his second brace in as many matches and added a pair of assists to guide Liverpool to a 5-0 drubbing of fellow top four contenders Tottenham Hotspur.
Suarez has endured a torrid time in England with a number of high profile incidents blighting a reputation that would have been nothing short of sparkling had he been judged on performances alone; although this latest plaudit may not be as good as bagging a trophy with Liverpool, the striker, who was handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Steven Gerrard on Sunday, sounds like he’s starting to enjoy his time at Anfield again — citing returning to play in the famous stadium as his favorite moment of the last year when asked by a supporter.
