It may have only been a cameo appearance, but Daniel Sturridge announced his return the only way he knows how — by getting in the mix and doing what he does best.
There are few things more dangerous than a striker that not only score, but create as well and on Sunday the 24-year old reminded us that Luis Suarez isn’t the only show in town. Sturridge set up the Uruguayan for Liverpool’s fourth goal of the match — holding up play and drawing three defenders before sliding his strike partner in to curl past rookie ‘keeper Jack Butland — and then added one of his own to seal the deal, following up on his own rebound with a bit of juggling before slotting home.
There was no rust to shake-off; Sturridge picked up exactly where he left off, though he admits it was hard watching from the stands. “It’s very hard when you’re on the side, watching the team, and you want to be involved in the fun and be out there” said the Reds striker. “I’m just happy that we’re up there within touching distance and we’re in the top four. It’s great to be a part of it.”
Now that Sturridge is back and firing, the real question is who drops to the bench in his place? Will it be Philippe Coutinho? Or youngster Raheem Sterling? Will we see a switch to three at the back or an adjustment in midfield? It’s hard to say, but it’s nice to have these kind of headaches, isn’t it?
