The 19-year-old, who had just returned to the squad following a knee injury, suffered a recurrence in training when his anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee ruptured for the second time this year. Yesil had just returned to action in October after 8-months on the sidelines after picking up the same injury on international duty representing Germany. Youth team boss Alex Inglethorpe confirmed the damage in a chat with the Liverpool ECHO earlier today.
“It’s a horrible situation for him. He had only just recovered from the previous injury” said the u21 manager. “We will give him all the support he needs. He’s a great character and I am sure he will come back strongly from this” he continued.
Yesil, who was dubbed by some as the “new Drogba”, arrived from German side Bayer Leverkusen just over a year and a half ago for £1mil made two starts for the Reds first team last season in the League Cup as Brendan Rodgers side downed West Bromwich Albion before crashing out to eventual winners Swansea City. The promising striker, who has yet to figure for the Liverpool first team this season, faces a hard road back to fitness and will surely be out of the picture for the World Cup in Brazil this coming summer.
