Guess what? Liverpool were terrible when Roy Hodgson was in charge. Despite picking — and starting — five of the most in-form players in all of the Premier League, even the red hot Reds couldn’t make the Three Lions sparkle.
You can have all the best players in the world, but if your tactics aren’t sound, you don’t have nothing and that’s exactly what we saw at Wembley yesterday. Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson and Glen Johnson were all named in the starting eleven, but not one of them looked like reproducing the kind of form that’s seen Liverpool leapfrog Arsenal into second place — though they looked the livest of a poor bunch.
Thankfully for the England boss, Sturridge was on hand to head in Adam Lallana’s cross as time ticked down and the Wembley crowd started to turn. Hodgson, speaking afterwards, spared himself what would have been a shower of criticism had his side lost to Denmark, saying that his two forwards need some time to gel.
“It is too hard to judge on one performance,” explained away the owl faced miscreant in his post-match press conference. “If we want to use these players together, there is some work to do to make sure they gel.” In the same vein, Roy can play a player who’s scored just under 20 Premier League goals this season in his prefered position rather than shifting him out to the flank in favour of a player who’s done nothing of note on either the international stage or in the league this season.
