Liverpool may have already downed West Ham United 2-1 at the Boleyn Ground, but no one told the Travelling Kop to stop singing – so they just kept on going.
A pair of Steven Gerrard penalties on either side of the half sent the Reds back to the top of the table and notched their winning streak to nine on the hop. Should Brendan Rodgers side win their remaining matches, and with a mere five left, that’s a distinct possibility, nothing can stop them claiming their first title of the Premier League era – much to the obvious delight of the Anfield faithful.
Although the Travelling Kop has always put on a performance, this season has taken on a markedly different edge, and as they continue to help their side trounce teams up and down the land, the soundtrack blaring from the stands has often been remarkably one-sided.
They won’t be on the road this weekend, but the atmosphere will be no less intense when Manchester City visits in what will truly be one of the pivotal clashes of the campaign. “We will unleash the supporters yet again on our opponents,” threatened Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. “Anfield is a very, very difficult place for people to come and play now.” They may have snuck a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium back in December, but coming to Merseyside is going to be a different proposition altogether – the Kop will make sure of that.
