The Belgian, a formidable rock for the Blue half of Manchester since signing from German side Hamburg for a fee believed to be around £6mil, fell awkwardly during training this morning and had to be helped from the pitch by his teammates. This, of course, comes as bad news for City boss Manuel Pellegrini whose side had been tipped to win the title from the word GO. The Citizens hold two matches in hand over Brendan Rodgers team, but if the Reds win all of their remaining matches, there’s no way for the Manchester outfit to overhaul them — which makes tomorrows meeting all the more important.
Kompany, who appeared to collide with fellow defender Micah Richards during a free kick exercise, apparently let out a loud scream before falling to the pitch and will be assessed by the City medical staff before an official ruling is made. The Belgian knows how important this match will be; it may not decide the Premier League title, but it will play a massive role in who claims it.
“We remember the match against them earlier in the season and, for me, Liverpool are still the best Premier League team we’ve faced at the Etihad” the 28-year old said in the buildup to the match. “They have been on a fantastic run and we know we have to be focused and leave the pitch at the end knowing we’ve given everything because there is so much at stake in this game.”
Although it’s still early doors, we’ll probably have to wait until tomorrow to see if Kompany makes the squad — and if not, who will replace him in the starting eleven.
