It was an emotional end to an emotional day at Anfield and no one felt Philippe Coutinho’s decisive strike less than ten minutes from fulltime more than Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
The Reds skipper, who has yet to win a Premier League title throughout his storied career, lead his team in an emotional huddle after the final whistle in which his soul was laid bare for the world to see — this means everything to the 33-year old lifelong Liverpudlian.
Despite Brendan Rodgers side being very much in the drivers seat, his captain knows that nothing is won quite yet. “It’s emotional but we need to stay calm as we still have four big games to come – but that meant so much, especially when they came back” said Gerrard. “That is probably the biggest statement we have made so far.”
Numerous FA Cup trophies, League Cups and even the most coveted of all the European honours have been lifted by the Scouser in the famous red shirt, but Liverpool’s 24-year wait for the title looks to be coming to an end; but it won’t come without some serious trials.
“That was the longest 90 minutes I have probably played in. It felt like the clock was going backwards during parts of that game” continued Gerrard. “We have got four cup games left. People said that was the biggest one was Manchester City but I disagree, the big one now is Norwich. Nothing is ours yet.”
