Anfield has always been a special ground, and Sunday’s match against Manchester City just went ahead and re-affirmed that. The noise generated from the stands apparently shook chimney’s in the surrounding area, and with the Reds winning the crunch clash 3-2 to keep their place at the summit, it’s easy to see — and hear — why.
For the first time since 2009, the Merseyside giants look well placed to capture their first league title of the Premier League era. With a mere four matches to go, they’re top of the league, though second placed Chelsea remain in hot pursuit and only two-points behind.
If Manchester City were going to keep pace, they would of had to stop Liverpool in their tracks; a feat obviously easier said than done. With Sunday’s encounter being the last home match before the 25th Anniversary of the Hillsborough Stadium Disaster, everyone associated with the club — including those in the stands — had extra motivation to make sure they turned in a result. You could see how much the win meant to the likes of Steven Gerrard after the match, though the pre-match rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone was enough to send shivers that would register on the Richter Scale down the spine.
Although Jose Mourinho’s team have experience on their side, they’ll surely be reviewing Liverpool’s meeting with the Citizens closely and hoping beyond hope that they can somehow silence the support coming from the stands. That, it has to be said, seems highly unlikely…
