The obligatory lap of honour followed Liverpool’s last home match of the season yesterday, and though they came up short in the race for the Premier League title, there was still much to celebrate as the players and the coaching staff walked around the pitch, clapping and waving to supporters.
With the Reds poised to ring in the changes this summer, a number of players could very well of been circling the famous filed for the last time. With Champions League football secured for next season and a rumoured £60mil war chest at his disposal, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is set to bring in a number of high quality signings as he tries to assemble a squad to compete at a high level both domestically and on the continent. With rumours of a bid for Adam Lallana circulating, one player everyone will be keeping an eye on is Lucas.
The Brazilian has been on the fringes of the squad for much of the season with injuries and a new role for Steven Gerrard resigning the once almighty midfielder to only 20-starts this season. With Joe Allen seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order and Rodgers sure to bring in some more competition for the middle of the park, his days on Merseyside could very well be numbered — something it looked like he’d confirmed when he tweeted a thank you to the supporters and a “Goodbye” following yesterday’s festivities.
With the rumour mill abuzz with speculation, Lucas has moved quickly to clarify his position and has followed up his tweet to explain that he meant the goodbye for the season and not for the team. With the 27-year old not figuring in Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup Plans, the midfielder will enjoy an extended lay-off ahead of the new season. Whether he’ll be back on Merseyside when the new season starts next year remains to be seen though; he may not be intending to leave, but the club could very well have other plans.
