Swiss attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri’s name has been continually mentioned as a Liverpool target and today Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio reported via Twitter that not only are the Reds interested in the 22-year old, but that they’ve opened talks with Bayern Munich over a possible transfer.
Of couse, the link seems a bit dicey with Shaqiri saying that he’d be playing for the German giants next season in a recent interview, but with his time in the team limited during the last campaign, a move to Merseyside isn’t something to rule out. The Reds have lodged a series of bids in an attempt to bring Southampton captain and England star Adam Lallana to Anfield, but with their last throw of the dice labelled as a “take it or leave it” offer, it looks like Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is sticking to his guns and moving on to other targets — namely, the unsettled midfielder.
Rodgers, just like every other manager under the sun, was hoping to get the bulk of his transfer business completed before the World Cup kicked off, but even the best laid plans fall by the wayside. Although the Reds have completed the capture of Southampton striker Rickie Lambert and highly rated Bayern Leverkusen youngster Emre Can, an attacking midfielder, a fullback and a new center half are all supposedly on the Northern Irishman’s wishlist and, as of yet, none have been secured.
As the Alberto Moreno situation grumbles on and Dejan Lovern reportedly tries to force a move from the South Coast, the attentions of the Liverpool transfer committee could very well be shifting back to Germany and a move for Shaqiri. The 22-year old has already voiced his dissatisfaction at his lack of playing time under Pep Guardiloa and with Rodgers looking to add quality to a squad that will be returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2009, a move to Anfield might be what finally get’s him onto Europe’s biggest stage.
