Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling carried his good pre-season form into the Reds first Premier League match of the season with a well taken strike to open the scoring against Southampton at Anfield.
If the finish from the youngster was something to behold, the pass from Jordan Henderson eclipsed it with his inch perfect through ball from the half-way line splitting two defenders before sitting up perfectly for Sterling to finish pass Saint’s débutante Fraser Forster.
Although the Reds have yet to light up the pitch the way they were last year, they’ve showed some promising moments against a Southampton side that’s looked wholly uncertain of themselves. Saint’s midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin came close to pulling one back for the visitors at the stroke of half-time with a dipping effort, but Reds ‘keeper Simon Mignolet was on hand to tip it over the bar.
There’s still a lot of football left to play, and with Ronald Koeman’s side looking dangerous on the counter-attack and his opposite number in Brendan Rodgers unable to assert the type of control that saw the Reds choke the life out of so many matches last year, we could be in for a nervy finish at Anfield.
