German club Wolfsburg are apparently interested in taking veteran Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel to the Bundesliga this summer, but both the Slovakian hard-man and his agent have said the only deal he’s interested in is the contract extension that the Reds have on offer.
News that vice-captain Jordan Henderson is set to sign a new big money, five-year deal comes as a boost for the Anfield outfit after they were knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday at the hands of Aston Villa. Pundits and fans alike have said that this could serve as the catalyst for a number of players to re-up their contracts and the news that Skrtel is looking to do the same — albeit on a much shorter basis — is only furthering that notion. “I am not leaving anywhere,” he’s quoted as saying in the Liverpool ECHO. “Not to Wolfsburg nor to Naples.”
The 30-year old, who only just returned to action after serving out a three-match ban for stomping on Manchester United ‘keeper David de Gea, is scheduled to hold talks with the club at the end of the campaign ahead of his current deal expiring next summer. Skrtel has long been linked with a reunion with former manager Rafa Benitez in Serie A, but the interest from Wolfsburg is something new — and according to his agent, non-existent.
“The only offer which is lying on Martin Skrtel’s table right now is the extension of his contract from Liverpool. We have been working on the details, and we will be finalising it soon” confirmed his agent Karol Csonto before playing down interest from the Bundesliga side. “It is not true that he has some offer from the German club. I don’t know anything even about their interest.”
