Earlier this month there was so much made of Steven Gerrard’s potential return to Liverpool during the Major League Soccer off-season that both his manager at the LA Galaxy, the Commissioner of the MLS and even Reds boss Jurgen Klopp were forced to comment on just what he’d be doing during his time on Merseyside.
While it’s now pretty clear that the 35-year old won’t be making an emotional return to playing for the Anfield outfit, it’s now been revealed that he could very well be playing against them next summer with Liverpool set to return to North America for a series of friendlies ahead of the 2016/17 season. It only makes sense, doesn’t it?
“Absolutely, that’s something we have on our radar of ideas,” said Reds CEO Ian Ayre in a chat with BBC Sport when asked if the LA Galaxy were being considered as opposition. “Steven is back in Liverpool at the moment and I’m sure we’ll get a chance to catch up and see what he thinks about that as an idea. It’s brilliant we have Steven in the US market, he’s been such a great servant to Liverpool and for him to be here – hopefully telling people how great the club is, if they don’t already know,” he continued. “We’ll come to the US next summer for certain. We don’t have any information of where. We’re trying to look at maybe the west coast, and a little bit of the east coast. Typically we’ve done the east coast in the past so maybe the west coast, but still negotiating with various people and who and where we’ll play, but we’re always excited.”
Consdering we’re not even half-way through this season, it’s a little bit early to start talking next year’s pre-season, but with Euro-2016 set to go on in France next summer, it’s no surprise that planning has already started.
