It’s with great sadness that Paisley Gates has learnt about the passing of Diogo Jota.
According to reports, the 28-year-old passed away with his brother André Silva, 25, in a traffic accident in Zamora, northwestern Spain.
The Portuguese forward become a pivotal figure at Liverpool since joining the club in September 2020, signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported £41million, and made an impact by scoring on his Premier League debut in a 3–1 victory against Arsenal, before netting Liverpool’s milestone 10,000th goal in a Champions League match versus Midtjylland.
In the 2021–22 season, under Jürgen Klopp, Jota’s influence only grew, scoring Liverpool’s first goal of the Premier League season and struck in key fixtures against Manchester United and Everton, helping secure the EFL Cup and FA Cup double and a Champions League final appearance.
Under new manager Arne Slot in the 2024–25 campaign, Jota’s adapted his style further, contributing significantly as Liverpool clinched the Premier League title. In October 2024, he celebrated his 100th Liverpool start with the winning goal at Crystal Palace.
Jota made 182 appearances for The Reds, scoring 65 goals. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
We wish to send our condolences to all Diogo’s family and friends, the club and wider Liverpool FC community.
