Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has left no room for debate on his opinion of the best goal he ever scored for the Reds.
Crouch arrived at Anfield from Southampton for £7 million with doubts over his unorthodox style, but won over fans with his work rate and eventually found form, scoring vital goals in the Premier League and Europe.
During a recent ranking of his goals for Liverpool’s YouTube channel, Crouch only had one goal in mind for the top spot.
The goal in question? His iconic overhead kick at Anfield in a Champions League tie against Galatasaray in 2006.
“I think it’s because it was in the Champions League, Kop end. The ball in, it was Steve Finnan who went down the right, who I loved playing with. His delivery was brilliant, so underrated.
I practiced that so much as a kid and for it to come off in the Champions League at Anfield, Kop end. It doesn’t get much better, that’s number one.”
The specular finish early in the second half was Crouch’s second of the game, helping Liverpool to a 3-2 victory on the night and on a run to the final where the Reds were beaten 2-1 by AC Milan in Athens.
Across his three seasons at Liverpool, the former England international scored 42 goals in 134 appearances and won the FA Cup in 2006 before leaving for Portsmouth in 2008.
Crouch remains a cult hero at Anfield, admired for his character and crucial contributions during a competitive era.
