Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has had his say on the summer transfer window and is clear in his appraisal of Arne Slot’s recruitment.
Heskey became Liverpool’s record signing when he joined for £11 million from Leicester City in 2000, going on to score 60 goals in 223 appearances for the club. Subsequent moves to Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa saw the former England international wrap up his career with 497 appearances and 107 in the English top flight.
With six weeks still remaining in the transfer window, the Premier League is already on track to smash its collective spending record and Heskey has been analysing his past club’s performance.
The Premier League champions have already made three marque signings — Bayer Leverkusen duo Florian Wirtz (£116m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£30m), along with left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40 million.
With the club closing in on a £79 million deal for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, the Reds total spend this summer could be pushed beyond the £250 million mark.
Speaking in a recent interview, Heskey is clear in his praise and believes Liverpool’s activity stands above the rest.
“I think the best window so far is Liverpool’s. They got Florian Wirtz, who I think adds an edge to their midfield, and I think Jeremie Frimpong is such a versatile player on the right flank.
As well as that, you’ve got Milos Kerkez, and they could be getting more players in before the transfer window is closed.”
The 47-year-old was particularly impressed by the Wirtz deal, with the German international having attracted interest from several elite European clubs before opting for Anfield.
“To get Wirtz when everyone else was linked to him, that’s a huge statement. To get it done early, too, could be important.”
Heskey concluded his praise for Liverpool’s movements in the market with two words.
“It’s pinpoint.”
In addition to their headline signings, Liverpool have also secured depth between the posts, bringing in reserve goalkeepers Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia and Freddie Woodman on a free transfer.
These moves further reflect the club’s all-encompassing approach to squad building, ensuring they have the depth to compete across multiple competitions.
With the Premier League champions’ business far from over and the window still open until early September, Liverpool are expected to remain active and Heskey believes their early dominance in the market has already sent a message.
