Alexander Isak will demand a huge new contract from Newcastle United if the club reject transfer offers for him this summer reports suggest.
Liverpool’s ambitious summer transfer window continues to generate headlines, with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak at the centre of renewed speculation.
The striker enjoyed an excellent 2024–25 campaign, scoring 27 goals in all competitions to help Eddie Howe‘s side win the League Cup and qualify for the Champions League after a year away.
Reports suggest that Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad for £63 million in 2022, is looking for a significant wage increase to commit his future to the Magpies. The 25-year-old still has three years left on his current deal, which runs until 2028, but his impressive form and growing list of admirers have made him one of the most talked-about forwards in Europe.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook says that the Swedish international is demanding £300,000-a-week to sign a new contract with Newcastle, raising fresh questions about his long-term future at St. James’ Park.
Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes is the highest paid player at the club after agreeing a new contract last year, reported to be worth £150,000–£160,000 per week. Isak’s current contract is worth £120,000 per week.
Liverpool, who are on the brink of completing the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike for £79 million were understood to have enquired about Isak earlier in the window. However, Newcastle have so far remained firm in their stance that the striker is not for sale, even in the face of potential bids that could break British transfer records.
Despite that, comments from Isak’s agent have added a layer of intrigue. Speaking to Saudi Arabian publication Arriyadiyah, Gonzalo Gaitán said:
“We are indeed studying and analysing all options, and we may be close to finalising the next step for the player.”
While he refused to reveal whether that next step involved staying at Newcastle or moving elsewhere, his comments have reignited talk of a potential transfer.
Sources have confirmed that Saudi clubs have also shown interest in Isak, although Liverpool remain one of the most serious European contenders monitoring the situation. With uncertainty surrounding the futures of several attacking players at Anfield, the Reds may still be in the market for a second forward even if the Ekitike deal goes through as expected.
There is however, a financial consideration. Signing Isak would require an investment of over £120 when factoring in wages and bonuses. That would not only break Liverpool’s transfer record twice in one window, but also challenge the club’s carefully structured wage system, especially if Isak’s £300,000-a-week demand remains non-negotiable
From the Premier League champions perspective, Isak remains a player of genuine interest but any move is likely to depend on outgoing players. While Ekitike offers a long-term solution and fits the profile of a future number nine, the opportunity to add a proven Premier League striker like him would be difficult to ignore if the terms became favourable.
For now, Liverpool are monitoring the situation. The door isn’t closed, and as the summer window progresses, the situation with Isak could develop further.
