Luis Díaz has officially left Liverpool to join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in a transfer worth £65.5 million, with the potential to rise further through add-ons.
The Colombian forward, who joined the Reds in January 2022, signed a four-year contract with Bayern, keeping him in Germany until 2029.
During his three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield, Díaz scored 41 goals and played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League triumph under manager Arne Slot. Despite his impact, the 28-year-old made it clear he wanted to move on, with two years remaining on his contract. Liverpool secured a strong financial return on a player they initially signed for just over £42 million, making a profit of around £23 million.
The agreement, which includes performance-related add-ons, has made the Colombian Bayern’s marquee signing of the summer and one of Liverpool’s most expensive outgoing transfers of all-time, behind only Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suárez.
Bayern Munich turned to Díaz after missing out on targets Florian Wirtz and Nico Williams. Barcelona had also shown interest but ultimately could not match the financial demands. Liverpool attempted to extend Díaz’s contract twice, but the player preferred to explore his options from last summer.
Díaz left Liverpool’s training camp in Japan on Monday and flew to Munich for medicals the following day. He had already said his goodbyes to teammates and completed the paperwork to finalize the transfer. He missed Liverpool’s friendly against AC Milan in Hong Kong due to Bayern’s interest.
The Premier League champions initial reluctance to sell Díaz softened after Bayern returned with a second offer above £65 million earlier this month. This sale marks another successful piece of business by Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, who has overseen £190 million in player sales since his arrival last year — helping to offset the club’s substantial summer spending, which nears £300 million.
With Díaz’s departure, Liverpool bids farewell to a key attacking player, but secures an impressive deal given his age and contract situation, allowing the club to reinvest in their squad ahead of the new season.
