Anfield icon Steven Gerrard has revealed which of his 212 career goals is his favourite.
Gerrard joined Liverpool as a nine-year-old, rising through the youth academy into the senior team before leading the Reds as club captain to some of their most historic nights.
Going on to make 710 appearances, placing him third on the Reds all-time list, Gerrard lifted two FA Cups, one League Cup, a UEFA Cup and a Champions League before leaving the club for LA Galaxy in 2015.
The former England international was known for big moments and special goals, but one stands alone in his eyes.
When asked in an interview with TNT Sports to choose his favourite goal throughout his career, Gerrard didn’t hesitate.
“West Ham, FA Cup Final 2006.”
For anyone who witnessed that day in Cardiff in May 2006, it was the only possible answer. Nearly twenty years on, this moment remains etched into the heart of every Liverpool supporter.
Liverpool were seconds away from defeat in the FA Cup final, 3-2 down to West Ham United, when the ball broke loose 30 yards from goal. The captain, suffering from cramp and barely able to run, took one last desperate swing of his right boot and the result was one of the most iconic goals ever scored in an FA Cup final.
It was a performance so extraordinary that the game has been known ever since simply as The Gerrard Final.
That 2005–06 season was arguably the peak of his career. Gerrard was crowned PFA Players’ Player of the Year, UEFA Club Player of the Year, and finished third in the Ballon d’Or voting. Yet all of those accolades pale next to that one swing of his right leg and the sheer will that defined his captaincy.
Speaking years later, Gerrard admitted he wasn’t thinking of anything else when the ball dropped.
“As soon as I’ve seen it falling, I wasn’t thinking of anyone else. I was hitting it.”
For fans, that moment remains as memorable today as it was that afternoon the roar from the Liverpool end, their captain collapsing with cramp, and the sight of him lifting the FA Cup soon after.
When Gerrard says it’s his favourite goal, he speaks for every Liverpool supporter. Some goals win matches, but that one defined a legacy.
