Liverpool has confirmed the permanent signing of promising Italian centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma, pending international clearance and a work permit.
The 18-year-old, widely regarded as one of Italy’s most exciting defensive talents, completed his medical at the AXA Training Centre today before putting pen to paper on a six year deal, signing until 2031.
Leoni enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in Serie A during the 2024–25 season, making 17 appearances and notching one goal for Parma. His move to Liverpool ensures he joins a squad brimming with defensive talent alongside Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez, while offering a fresh injection of versatility and long-term promise.
Though official figures remain undisclosed, reports suggest the transfer fee is around £26 million, potentially rising with add-ons. Leoni’s arrival is part of an aggressive summer rebuild at Anfield, taking Liverpool’s total transfer spend well past the £300 million mark.
At 6ft 4in, Leoni is a commanding aerial presence, winning close to two-thirds of his aerial duels last season. His physicality is complemented by composure in possession; he is comfortable using either foot and averaged nearly 50 passes per match in Serie A with an accuracy of 88%.
Capable in both a back three and a back four, Leoni is noted for his anticipation and positional discipline — traits that have helped him cope with some of the league’s most physical strikers.
Speaking in his first interview with the club, the 18-year-old starlet described his excitement to join the setup at Anfield.
“I’m very happy to be here. It’s a really great sensation and I’m honoured to be here. Yeah, a lot [of excitement]. I’m so honoured. I was very happy [about Liverpool being interested]. When I saw this I said, ‘Wow, this is crazy.’ I’m very happy.”
Leoni has represented Italy at under-18 and under-19 level and is tipped for a call-up to the under-21 squad. His move to Anfield comes as Liverpool look to refresh their defensive options following a summer of heavy investment.
The Reds begin their Premier League campaign this weekend, and while Leoni is unlikely to start immediately, manager Arne Slot is expected to integrate him quickly into the first-team environment.
