Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons has joined Tottenham Hotspur from RB Leipzig, bringing a blend of flair, technical ability, and Premier League anticipation to North London.
The 22-year-old will be officially unveiled to the home crowd at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when Spurs take on Bournemouth at 3pm UK time on Saturday afternoon.
The Spurs hierarchy had previously pursued Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, missing out on both before pivoting decisively toward Simons.
The deal, reportedly around £51.8 million, sees the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain youth star commit to a five-year contract, signalling Tottenham’s intent to bolster their creative options in the number 10 role.
For Simons, the Premier League presents the chance to test himself against some of Europe’s elite. And while Tottenham will face numerous top sides, the Dutchman is particularly looking forward to one matchup.
During his first interview as a Spurs player, Simon’s was asked which Premier League player he’s most excited to face, and the reply was instant.
“My friend, Jeremie Frimpong”.
Frimpong, of course, is now a Liverpool player, having joined the Reds for £29 million this summer, and the two know each other well from the Netherlands national team.
They have also faced off in the Bundesliga with Frimpong previously at Leverkusen. The prospect of renewing that rivalry in England has clearly sparked excitement for both players.
Thomas Frank, Spurs’ head coach, welcomed Simons’s arrival, highlighting both the youngster’s talent and readiness for top-level football.
“I’m really pleased we have brought Xavi in — he is a great addition to the squad.
He is still young, however he already has good experience and, over the past few years, has played a lot of games at the top level. His ability to get goals and assists, both from the number 10 position and left-wing, is excellent.
He also has a great eye for his teammates in terms of unlocking defenses, and I know he will come in and be part of a good team that is already working hard together.”
The move also underscores the growing presence of Dutch talent in the Premier League. With players like Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and now Frimpong at Liverpool, alongside Simons at Spurs, the English top flight is set for more Dutch showdowns this season.
For Spurs fans, the hope is that Simons’s technical quality, vision, and versatility will inject creativity into a side seeking consistency in the Premier League. And with international teammate Frimpong now a Liverpool defender, fans can anticipate a new Premier League rivalry that mixes friendship, familiarity, and elite-level competition.
As the 22-year-old adapts to life in England, one thing is clear — Tottenham have secured an exciting addition, and the Premier League will soon witness a new Dutch talent leaving his mark on some of the league’s biggest stages.
