Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign England centre-back Marc Guehi for £35 million from Crystal Palace.
The 25-year-old will complete the formalities of his move, including a medical, in London on Monday before signing a long-term contract with the Premier League champions.
Liverpool are already top of the Premier League after 1-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday and an exciting deadline day signing will only increase their chances of another title triumph.
Liverpool have already had a busy transfer window, with the board showing there is a clear objective at the club. A whopping £116 million was spent to sign Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike did not come cheap either.
Even with just hours remaining, business is not yet over at Anfield. It was reported earlier in the year that Liverpool wanted to sign Marc Guehi, but it was said that he would come at a hefty cost of £80 million.
That is certainly no longer the case as according to Liverpool Echo and a £35m deal has been agreed to bring Marc Guehi to the Champions of England. The centre-back is having a medical in London, before he is unveiled as Liverpool’s latest signing of the summer. The deal also includes a 10 percent sell-on clause.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner was keen on keeping Guehi, but it was always going to be difficult blocking a move, with the defender’s contract expiring next summer. If he refused to sign a new contract, the Eagles would end up receiving no transfer fee when he departed.
Joe Gomez had been discussed as part of a potential swap deal for Guehi after Glasner claimed on Friday that it was “not possible” to find a replacement for Guehi at such short notice. However, Liverpool did not want to lose their defender, who has been at the club for the past decade.
This comes as a major blow to Palace, who have already sold Eberechi Eze to Arsenal this month, but it is fantastic news for Liverpool. They may have won the league last season, but their defence was not the most convincing.
Guehi’s record speaks for itself having captained Palace to FA Cup and Community Shield glory in recent months, despite only recently turning 25 years old.
The centre-half has also played international football for England and he will be looking to add to his 23 appearances next weekend, after being selected in Thomas Tuchel’s latest squad.
With Guehi on his way to Anfield, Arne Slot will definitely feel more confident that his team can wrap up another league title and also take on Europe’s elite in the Champions League.
