Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes were both brilliant midfielders for England, but Glenn Hoddle has had no trouble deciding which was the better player.
When discussing how good a player Steven Gerrard was, no one seems capable of failing to mention Paul Scholes or Frank Lampard. The trio were known for their all-round abilities as midfielders and played alongside each other for the England national team.
But whilst they failed to lift a trophy at international level during England’s ‘golden generation’, the three midfielders amassed an incredible 36 major honours between them at club level.
Now, Glenn Hoddle has given his verdict on which is the better player whilst taking part in a quick-fire interview with Mail Sport.
Hoddle’s answer will no doubt disappoint Liverpool supporters, because while he believes Gerrard was a level above Lampard, the former England manager declared that Scholes was better than Gerrard.
Hoddle went even further, naming Scholes as the best player he has ever coached. It was Hoddle who gave Scholes his international debut and the former Manchester United man once said Hoddle was the best manager he played under for England.
The feeling is mutual, as Hoddle called for Scholes to be introduced into the Premier League hall of fame.
“People ask me that, ‘Who’s the best player you’ve worked with?’
Scholes, always. Wonderful player, had a little bit of everything actually, but excelled in getting in the box and creativity.”
However, Hoddle said Gerrard should be introduced too, praising the former Liverpool captain, despite the fact he never won the Premier League.
“I don’t think you can have a Hall of Fame without Steven Gerrard. Even though he didn’t win the league, what he did for Liverpool at that time was quite incredible.
Those two players, you just would walk a million miles to go and watch them play. I really would.”
Gerrard may not have won as much silverware with Liverpool as Scholes did with Manchester United, but if a match winner was required, Gerrard would be the obvious choice. He was more of an attacking threat than Scholes and has a far superior goal contributions record.
Scholes was a top notch midfielder who kept things tidy, but it could be argued that Gerrard could do everything Scholes could, as well as other things.
