Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah has sent a classy farewell message on social media to his former teammate Harvey Elliott following the midfielder’s departure from Anfield, calling him a “champion” and insisting Aston Villa are lucky to have him.
Elliott, 22, completed a season-long loan move to Villa earlier this week, with a purchase obligation to buy which will be triggered after 10 appearances.
Salah, who defended former Liverpool teammates Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez from unfair social media comparisons, took to his official channels to highlight the qualities he admired in Elliott during their six years together at Liverpool.
In a heartfelt message, Salah wrote:
“You’ll be remembered for your loyalty and dedication every time you were called upon. You leave as a champion, and I’ve got no doubt you’ll do big things at your new club. They are lucky to have you.”
The message was accompanied by two photos showing memorable moments between the two players one from a 7-0 win against Rangers in 2022, and another from a pre-season training camp earlier that year.
Elliott responded warmly, expressing both gratitude and admiration.
“More than a brother to me!! An icon to look up to and a real close friend whenever I needed you! Thank you king.”
The midfielder’s move comes after interest from several clubs, including Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and his former clubs Fulham and West Ham United. Aston Villa made a decisive late move on transfer deadline day, securing the loan with a clear obligation to make the deal permanent.
Elliott was determined to secure more regular first-team opportunities, particularly following his standout performance at the Under-21 European Championship in Slovakia, where he won Player of the Tournament.
The loan deal also includes buy-back and sell-on clauses, ensuring Liverpool maintain an interest in Elliott’s development while giving the midfielder the chance to continue growing under Unai Emery at Villa Park.
Elliott’s six years at Liverpool were packed with achievements and milestones. He made 149 appearances across all competitions, contributing significantly to a team that won multiple trophies during his time on Merseyside.
His honours include the Premier League, FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, and the Club World Cup in December 2019. Beyond the silverware, Elliott became known for his professionalism, dedication, and the strong relationships he built with his teammates, particularly senior figures like Salah.
Salah’s classy farewell emphasises the respect the 22-year-old earned not only as a player but as a teammate and friend.
As Elliott begins this new chapter with Aston Villa, he carries with him the lessons, experiences, and friendships built at Liverpool. The move provides a platform to showcase his talent consistently in the Premier League, while leaving Anfield having earned the respect and admiration of one of the club’s all-time greats.
