Daniel Sturridge has shared what he believes to be the best goal of his career and it is one many Liverpool supporters will remember.
Daniel Sturridge always had an eye for goal and he often found the back of the net during his first season at Liverpool. However, quantity was not the only thing the striker aimed for when it came to scoring. Like all centre forwards, Sturridge scored his fair share of close range efforts and tap-ins, but he also scored a few screamers in his time.
Away Days suggested to Sturridge that his famous chip against West Brom was his best ever goal and he revealed the player who inspired him to work on that type of shot.
Sturridge said: “I think in terms of the technique, I would agree. I would say that was probably the most difficult goal I scored. The angle was right, I learned that technique from Deco actually.
“And it wasn’t that I learned the technique from him. I used to chip goalkeepers when I was younger and through the academy, the same type.
Sturridge explained how while chipping a goalkeeper was nothing new, there was something unique about the way Deco lined up the ball into a shooting position.
He continued: “But that specific thing of, he used to go on an angle. So whenever we used to do shooting drills, usually you ping it to the edge of the box. You take a touch, you take your shot. With Deco, he used to take his touch to his side and then he would chip it the opposite way.
“So technically if the keeper’s set standing central, he’s now got to go to one side. So that technique I took from him. So then against West Brom it’s kind of like I was moving to the left to then go to the right.
Sturridge only spent a year playing alongside Deco at Chelsea, but he has the Brazilian to thank for the finest goal in his career. The diagonal chip was the cherry on top of a brilliant team performance, as Liverpool thrashed West Brom 4-1 in front of their home supporters.
