Liverpool suffered a second consecutive defeat after falling short in 1-0 defeat in the Champions League against Galatasaray, but TalkSport host Simon Jordan is not impressed by the criticism Arne Slot’s team have suffered after last night showing
Plenty of opinions are flying around about Liverpool after their fascinating start to the season. The Reds are currently sit top of the Premier League two points ahead of second place Arsenal, but have had to fight hard to secure victories, even against the likes of Burnley and Southampton.
Liverpool’s most recent match ended in a 1-0 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray, a team they should have been beating on paper. However, Simon Jordan believes there are pundits who have overreacted after the defeat.
Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy was criticising Liverpool on talkSPORT and Jordan responded by claiming things are not that bad over at Anfield.
He said: “Ooh, they’ve lost two games, they’re top of the Premier League. They lost to Nottingham Forest at home last season in their first three or four games.
“The only difference in this situation is that they haven’t looked so assured. I remember watching Liverpool in the first game of the season against Ipswich and they weren’t looking great either.
“Let’s get things into context: they’re top of the Premier League, they’ve lost to Palace who haven’t been beaten by anybody in 18 games including some of the best teams in the country, so there’s no great shame there.”
Jordan believes Liverpool’s squad £400+ million turnover this summer has played a part in their struggles and he believes this will resolve itself in due course.
He continued: “The fact is because they’ve spent £400million over three transfer windows, they’ve replaced players they were forced to through tragedies, which increased expenditure that they wouldn’t have to do, so they’re going through a bit of a blip for five seconds. It’ll all assemble itself.”
The conversation moved on to Jamie Carragher, who has claimed Liverpool are not playing like a top team and he accused them of playing basketball instead of football. However, Jordan slammed the former Reds defender for making comments solely to provoke people.
He added: “I’m sure Slot was all ears with his notebook taking down everything that Jamie said. I like Jamie and I think a lot of the time what he says is worth listening to, in this instance he’s making noise on a television show to create a reaction in it.
“You’re top of the Premier League, you’re not playing particularly well but the key component of any side is that if you can win the majority of your games that you play in not very well, there isn’t too much wrong with you.
“If you’ve got the assembled parts, I’m glad Isak hasn’t hit the ground running as I’d like to see him struggle a bit – mean spirited but not withstanding it. I look at it and think to myself, ‘what is there to worry about?’ They are top. There will be little to worry about.”
Liverpool will be determined to get back to winning ways, but that will not be straightforward. Their next match is an away game against Chelsea, a fixture they lost 3-1 in May and haven’t won their for five years so it would be a perfect fixture to respond and silence critics for now.
Should Liverpool fail to win on Saturday, they will have to wait until after the international break for another opportunity and Manchester United will provide the opportunity at Anfield. Their last meeting was also in May and ended in a 2-2 draw.
