Liverpool have hit a rough patch of form and Daniel Sturridge has revealed what he believes to be the cause.
Ex-Reds forward Sturridge has shared what he thinks is the reason why Liverpool are continuing to perform below the levels expected of them and it is about far more than any individual player.
It was another difficult matchday for the Reds on Tuesday as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League. This followed a 2-1 Premier League loss to Crystal Palace last weekend.
Sturridge was on punditry duties for Amazon Prime and he drew a comparison between Arne Slot’s team now compared with last season.
He said: “They’re not the same team they were last year. You can tell the chemistry isn’t there right now.”
The former Liverpool striker is not the only one raising concerns about the side. Jamie Carragher claimed Liverpool were not playing like a top team, claiming they were better in defence last season and have failed to improve in attack.
Mohamed Salah is one player who has been a particular talking point in recent weeks. The winger’s goal contribution stats are quite good, but he has put in some questionable performances.
Didi Hamann has blamed this on a change in dynamics at Liverpool. He not only believes Salah is showing signs of deteriorating, but that he is not coping with the summer signings stealing his spotlight.
Liverpool made plenty of attacking additions in the summer including Alexander Isak,Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. It is only natural that in order for these players to gel, they require more time.
Despite the concerns of Sturridge and other former Liverpool players, the Champions of England are still top of the Premier League table by two points. This is due to a number of narrow victories, which have often seen them score late goals to secure all three points.
Slot will keep looking at ways to get his team to click as they seek to return to winning ways before the next international break.
However, he needs to come up with a solution quickly. His decision to play Jeremie Frimpong at right wing and Dominik Szoboszlai at right back against Galatasaray was bizarre and did not work. Rather than thinking too far outside the box, Slot must attempt to replicate what made his team so good last season and get them firing again.
