Liverpool failed in a last ditch attempt to secure Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day and they could miss out on the defender for a second time.
Former Premier League manager Alan Pardrew is not convinced Liverpool will be able to convince Marc Guehi to make the move to Anfield when his contract expires next summer.
Liverpool are still interested in Guehi, who is not expected to sign a new deal at Crystal Palace. However, Arne Slot’s team are not expected to pursue a move for the centre-back in January.
The Reds would benefit from the signing of another centre-back, with only three options currently available. Of these, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez have both been linked with moves away from Liverpool.
Guehi could be the defender Liverpool continue to target, but ex-Crystal Palace player and manager Pardrew believes another club could beat them to the England international’s signature.
He told Sky Sports: “My guess is that internationally will be an option because of that January clause where a club can sign him. I think Munich are in the box seat. And I think that’s similar to Real Madrid.
“They have a similar model. They’re looking for some kind of influence and change and value to their signings.
“So he’ll play for any of them teams and I think it’ll be brilliant for England in the World Cup.”
Pardrew rates Guehi both on and off the pitch and believes he will have plenty of options when he decides to move on from Selhurst Park.
He continued: “The bottom line is what we have here is an outstanding individual as a footballer and as a personality, and every club will want him.
“Marc has ended up, in my view, in a better position, than if he’d have moved to Liverpool. He’s now perhaps even still got Liverpool. So who knows? He’s in a great position.
“I know he’s a real family person and I know his father is very influential and I think between them the decision will be made.”
Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are all reportedly interested in signing Guehi. Crystal Palace have accepted that he will leave at the end of his contract and would be open to selling him in January in order to secure a transfer fee.
Liverpool may have to make a decision on whether to make a bid or risk missing out on the defender who has already once slipped away from their grasp at the last moment once before
