Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has selected a Liverpool player as one of the five greatest midfielders in the world.
Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has offered his verdict on the world’s five best players who operate in his former position.
Scholes named Barcelona duo Pedri and Frenkie De Jong in his selection, in first and fifth place respectively. Manchester City’s Rodri was given second place and Champions League winner Vitinha was chosen in third.
The midfielder Scholes listed in fourth is none other than Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister. It is fitting for the 26-year-old talent to be recognised for his contributions towards his teams’ achievements. This comes after Mac Allister finished 22nd at the Ballon d’Or, which is not a fair reflection of his performances.
Mac Allister is a World Cup and Copa America winner with Argentina and he added the Premier League to his list of trophies at the end of last season.
Scholes told The Good the Bad and the Football: “Mac Allister, thought he was brilliant last year for Liverpool. Controlled everything.”
It seems the United legend is not Mac Allister’s only admirer. Real Madrid have reportedly shown an interest in securing his signature, although this is looking less likely now due to his current form.
This season has proved to be more of a challenge for Mac Allister and it should not come as a surprise considering all the money Liverpool spent during the summer transfer window.
However, the main factor behind this is that Mac Allister is still finding his way back to full fitness after missing the majority of pre-season due to the muscle injury he picked up in May.
The composed midfielder has not yet played a full 90-minute match this season, although he continues to start more often than not. This is a result of Arne Slot seeking to manage his time on the pitch in order to prevent a possible relapse.
Mac Allister has not found the back of the net so far this season and he only has one assist. However, his game is not merely about bagging goal contributions. According to Data MB, Mac Allister is in the top 13 per cent of players for progressive carries and the top 21 per cent for forward passes completed.
The ex-Brighton & Hove Albion man will be hoping to continue his road to a full recovery after the international break so he can pick up from his excellent displays last season.
