Liverpool legend has opened up on his major problem with Arne Slot, expressing doubts over the Liverpool manager’s current approach and what needs to change after recent struggles.
Steve Nicol has been critical of Arne Slot ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United for one reason in particular.
There was always going to be competition in the Liverpool first-team squad after the money which was spent in the summer.
Competition can sometimes be healthy for a team, but it does have the potential to disrupt consistency and prevent players from learning how to play at their best as a unit.
This is certainly an issue Liverpool must look into because the Reds are on a three match losing streak. Their upcoming opponents Manchester United have been poor away from home, but they have defeated Chelsea and Sunderland in two of their three most recent fixtures.
Former Liverpool right back Steve Nicol has shared his concerns ahead of the clash between the two rivals. He believes Arne Slot had a trusted starting eleven last season, but there is now a feeling of uncertainty surrounding the Dutchman’s squad.
He told ESPN: “Arne Slot’s in a position where last year we knew exactly what he was doing. You knew what was happening, you knew who was playing where, you knew where the jobs were, you know who was starting where.”
However, Nicol is no longer convinced Slot knows who his best players are and as a result, there is no way of knowing who will start at Anfield on Sunday.
The man who spent 13 years at Liverpool went on to list the various new signings who might not start for his old team against Manchester United, despite how much they cost the club.
“Right now, listen to us talking,” he continued. “We don’t know whether [Florian] Wirtz is going to play, we don’t whether [Hugo] Ekitike is going to play, we don’t know whether [Alexander] Isak is going to play.
“I mean there’s so many questions now and we just don’t know what he’s going to put on the field at Anfield.”
Liverpool will hope to find form again after the international break, but there is little time to talk tactics. The Reds will travel to Frankfurt in the Champions League just three days after the United match, before making a trip to Brentford the Saturday after this one.
It may not be known who will start for Liverpool this weekend, but with the fixtures stacking up, every player will need to play his part sooner or later.
