One club to have previously shown an interest in Joe Gomez are looking to sign him in January, but Liverpool may be reluctant to sell their much needed defender.
Joe Gomez has spent a decade of his playing career at Anfield, but it seemed he might finally bid Liverpool farewell in the summer.
AC Milan, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace were all keen on the central defender, but a move never materialised.
If Crystal Palace had been willing to sell Marc Guehi to Liverpool, Gomez’s departure would have been more likely. However, that deal fell through at the last minute, meaning Arne Slot’s team would not have had the necessary squad depth if they parted ways with the 28-year-old.
There is still optimism from some clubs that Gomez will become available again, particularly as his contract expires in the summer of 2027, which is fewer than two years away.
Of these, AC Milan have emerged as the favourites to secure the signature of Gomez, as they have reignited their interest in the Liverpool star.
Italian publication Corriere dello Sport – via Sport Witness have reported that “an attack is on the way” from the Serie A giants in relation to signing Gomez.
The club’s sporting director, Igli Tare, wants to get business done quickly, in order to avoid any last minute deals falling through. As a result, Milan are likely to make contact with Liverpool soon to discuss a potential deal for the Englishman.
Gomez himself is said to have previously held positive talks with the Italian outfit in the past, so he could still be interested in a move.
The opportunity to play more first-team football is definitely an attractive incentive, with the defender making just four Premier League appearances so far this season.
He may also be motivated to pursue a move due to Fikayo Tomori, who has enjoyed his time at Milan since trading the Premier League for Serie A four years ago.
However, Liverpool do not have many available centre-backs. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate may be the obvious starters, but Gomez will be called on if either of the defensive duo picks up an injury.
Therefore, AC Milan may have to be patient and wait for next summer to sign Gomez, unless Liveprool add to their backline in January.
